Talking constantly is very important to your child’s language development. The more words a young child hears, the greater understanding, or receptive language. And strong receptive language is a precursor to saying words – “expressive language”.
Talking in small phrases (1-3 words) is especially important so a child can process what is being said, and maybe even attempt to repeat.
BUT JUST AS IMPORTANT is repeating your words / phrases. Over and over again This BOMBARDMENT cements each word or phrase, and increases he likelihood of the child remembering and maybe even repeating.
A good rule of thumb is to repeat important words / phrases THREE TIMES. And make sure to PAUSE in between repeats, in case your child chimes in, or just for processing.
For example - "Let's DRIVE (Pause) Can we drive? (Pause) I drive!"
